CENOTAPHS BY THE SAND

YEAR: 2024

Journalism. Photography. Tavelling. Death. Beach. Stuffed Animals. Gloomy

This project originated in the city of Valparaíso, Chile, a coastal city that once thrived as a key economic hub during Pinochet’s regime. Following the coup d'état, however, the city experienced a significant decline, becoming one of the most impoverished areas in the country. The series draws inspiration from **Torpederas Beach**, where an unexpected discovery of a cenotaph near the cliffs, surrounded by weathered stuffed animals scattered among jagged stones, provided a powerful starting point. The icy Pacific waters crashing below heighten the sense of unease, reflecting a city shaped by a turbulent history and the long-lasting impacts of neoliberalism.

This stark landscape, with its unsettling combination of remnants from both human and natural forces, speaks to the deeper tensions running through Valparaíso. The worn, abandoned objects seem to silently bear witness to past and present struggles, offering no clear answers but inviting reflection. The series captures this complex interplay between survival, loss, and endurance, resisting overt symbolism while evoking a sense of quiet resilience in the face of harsh realities.
